Skill based days

Module 2: Navigation

Youth rangers storyviewer 04

Navigation skills take up a large section of the Youth Ranger Programme and the group can even gain the National Navigation Award Scheme at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, if they complete the course.

They will be taught about grid references, map symbols, estimating distances, magnetic variation of maps, using compass bearings, understanding limiting factors such as height gain or loss by studying contours.

These skills will eventually lead to them planning and walking a safe route in line with criteria in duration, difficulty and specific navigation objectives.

Module 3: Interpretation

P5110061The Peak District National Park is well know for its dramatic scenery, interesting flora and endangered species.

It is important for the Youth Rangers to be able to interpret the landscape by studying Ordnance survey maps, through ecological surveys and by discussing features as a group.

To do this, they will be asked to plan and lead a guided walk for members of their community or family/friends and to create promotional leaflets or posters for people to theach them more about the National Park, or a specific area within its boundaries.

Evidence for these can be given by given by photographs or by making a DVD of the planning and event.

Module 4: Biodiversity and nature conservation

P1010007Practical work in, and the theory of, Nature Conservation is an important part of the Youth Ranger programme. Throughout the course, they will learn a wide range of skills and ideas about the different methods of Nature Conservation. They will learn how to restore and protect key habitats within the National Park.

Such issues may include protecting fragile moorlands by reseeding heather or creating paths and barriers to prevent erosion. The skills in this section will be taught throughout the Youth Ranger course and can often be related into the Youth Ranger's local communities, where they will be encouraged to take part in, or organise conservation projects.
