community champions taster event-5This course will follow the modules of the Youth Rangers programme; survival skills, navigation, interpretation and conservation, with participants being given an opportunity to develop skills and experience in these areas, as well as considering leadership issues and health and safety. Opportunities to consider sources of support and ways to link these activities into the curriculum will also be considered.

It is a skill - based course, designed to provide practical know – how in the outdoors. Basic skills such as use of cutting tools, firecraft and shelter building will be taught; ideas and techniques to develop interpretation and conservation skills will also be introduced. All in the context of providing a safe but stimulating outdoor classroom. Using the Peak District National Park.
The course is particularly suited to teachers and teaching assistants and youth leaders who are looking for outdoor activities to run with young people or considering running the Youth Ranger Programme with the Peak District National Park.

The aims of the course are:
•    Raising awareness of the opportunities available for young people to develop key skills and engage with natural heritage within the National Park
•    Develop skills and confidence of leaders so that they can deliver heritage activities in the National Park, using elements of the existing Youth Ranger Programme.
•    Provide support, information and practical advice on arranging a visit e.g. accommodation, health and safety, public transport, other support organisations.
